Dams and tailings ponds are fundamental structures in mining for the safe storage of waste generated during the extraction and processing of minerals. Their waterproofing with specialized geosynthetics plays a crucial role in preventing leaks that could compromise physical stability or impact underground water sources. In addition to minimizing the risk of soil and groundwater contamination, the use of additional geosynthetics such as geogrids contributes to strengthening soil strength or dam reinforcements, especially in construction methods such as centerline or downstream, increasing their efficiency and operational safety.

Waterproofing of the Tailings Dam of the Mina Justa Project, Ica, Peru
In challenging conditions such as those of the San Juan de Marcona coastal desert, ensuring the waterproofing of tailings dams in mining projects requires solutions with high technical performance and operational efficiency. For Phase II of the Mina Justa Project’s tailings dam, approximately 20 hectares were waterproofed with geomembranes designed to provide a reliable and durable barrier against waste seepage. These geomembranes stand out for their high resistance to chemical and physical degradation, allowing them to maintain their long-term integrity in harsh environments.
Their rapid installation allowed for optimized resources and execution times, and their flexibility allowed them to adapt to the terrain’s geometry. Thus, this solution not only reinforces the project’s environmental safety but also adds value in terms of sustainability and impact control in one of the most sensitive sectors of the mining process.
