Paving with polymer-modified asphalt mixtures

THE PROBLEM:

The total length of the project (428 km) was divided into the following sub-sections:

  • Quilca District – Arequipa District (Repartición) (121.549 km)
  • Matarani District – Moquegua District (158.234 km)
  • Ilo District – Tacna District (113.310 km)
  • Tacna – La Concordia District (35.520 km)

For the traffic volume that this concession will support, the conventional asphalt mix proposed in the initial engineering study did not meet the performance requirements of a beneficial long-term solution. Furthermore, the solution contemplated the placement of a 4 cm thin asphalt layer (thin layer). The project included sections with long transport distances (more than 4 hours), which caused the asphalt mix to cool, resulting in a failure to achieve the desired compaction densities.

THE SOLUTION:

TDM proposed a high-performance solution to the client that offered long-term durability, ensuring the concession’s performance for longer. Polymer-modified asphalt and state-of-the-art warm-mix additives solved the compaction problems.

BENEFITS:

  • Improves asphalt mix performance.
  • Reduces thermal susceptibility.
  • Reduces susceptibility to induced moisture.
  • Allows asphalt mix transportation over long distances and for longer periods of time.
  • Allows the plant to maintain a single location.
  • Resists rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking.
  • Improves aggregate adhesion.
